How do I clean my breast pump parts?

Breast pump parts don’t require sterilisation, as they only come into contact with breast milk, which is already sterile. Frequent sterilisation can cause parts to deteriorate, discolour, and even warp if exposed to heat over 100°C, leading to more frequent replacements.

Unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider, we recommend cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Be sure all parts are fully dry before use.

For more ways to care for your pump parts and maximise their lifespan, check out our tips below.

How regularly should I replace my breast pump parts?

Here are our recommended time frames for upgrading each part.

Please keep in mind, these are general guidelines, not strict rules or guarantees.

The lifespan of the parts will ultimately depend on factors like usage, care, cleaning methods, the efficiency of cleaning, storage, and heat exposure.

Original Night Owl & Baby Owl:

  • Shield: 2-3 months
  • Valve: 1-2 months
  • Diaphragm: 1-2 months
  • Flange inserts: 1-2 months
  • Linker: 2-3 months

Mumma Owl:

  • Valve: Approximately 1.5 - 2.5 months, or as needed if it shows signs of wear.
  • All other parts: Approximately 2-3 months, or as needed if they show signs of wear.
What will help my breast pump parts last longer?

Here are some tips to help maximise the life of your breast pump parts:

Check parts: Regularly check parts for signs of wear and replace them as needed to keep everything running smoothly.

Use gentle cleaning methods: Opt for mild detergents and avoid scrubbing too hard. A soft sponge or cloth works well, avoid bottle brushes to prevent any tears or fraying. Do not use a dishwasher.

Clean after each use: Ensure parts are cleaned thoroughly after every use to prevent milk residue build-up and bacteria build-up that weakens materials over time.

Ensure thorough but gentle cleaning: Clean parts thoroughly after each use to avoid milk residue build-up, which can affect their performance over time.

If sterilising, be gentle: When sterilising, avoid extreme high-heat methods like microwaving or boiling for long periods, as these can cause warping. If possible, use warm water or sterilising solutions to keep parts in good condition.

Store properly: Keep parts in a dry, cool area, away from direct sunlight or damp environments to prevent accelerating wear and tear.

Handle with care: Be gentle when assembling or disassembling parts to avoid unnecessary strain, which can lead to damage over time.

Sterilise thoughtfully: If you choose to sterilise the parts, limit frequent sterilisation if possible to help parts last longer.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Stick to baby-safe cleaning products to protect the materials from breaking down.

Limit soaking time: Avoid leaving parts soaking in water or cleaning solutions, to prevent weakening.

By following these tips, you'll help ensure your pump parts stay in better shape for longer!

Why do I need to replace my breast pump parts?

Can I put my breast pump parts in a dishwasher?

No. Most dishwashers operate at over 100° which can be harmful to your parts. This may cause them to discolour, warp or deteriorate and require replacing faster.

We recommend simply warm soapy water with a soft cloth or brush.

Great pump

This pump has been great. I love being able to be hands free. I feel I get very close to the quantity I can pump from spectra s2.

Thank you so much for your lovely review Ange! We're thrilled to hear you're enjoying the freedom of hands-free pumping with our pump. It looks like you're currently using the default 24mm size—please double check your size using our fitting guide as you likely need a smaller size, a flange insert in a closer size will help you go from 'very close to' matching your Spectra S2 output to achieving the same or even more! 😊 Feel free to reach out if you'd like any help with sizing—our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Great Wearable Pump!

With my first pregnancy in 2021, I found it difficult to pump due to work schedules. Now with my second child, thanks to Mumma Owls, I have established good supply of milk! I can pump while working and doing house chores. I was skeptical about the product initially, but it really boosts my milk supply. Great product and great investment!

Twin mum can breastfeed again!

I am so happy that I bought my hands free pump from an Australian company. The after sales service from the Night Owl customer service team was exemplary. I am mum of identical twin girls and found it extremely difficult to tandem feed and one baby was rejecting the breast. I was also not producing enough milk for two, which exacerbated the breast feeding problem. Determined to increase my milk output as well as give my babies some breast milk, I researched pump options and purchased 2 x Mumma Owls. After receiving the pumps, I was having trouble finding the right flange sizes for my breasts. The service team responded straight away to my email and provided practical assistance as well as a referral to a lactation consultant which they found for me. They also provided me with a refurbished V2 to trial. I have never experienced such caring after sales service from any product purchase before. My twins are now four months old, and I have slowly re-introduced them to the breast. They are now patient enough to wait their turn to feed as tandem feeding is too difficult for me. I would not have been able to breast feed again without keeping my milk production going, and the Mumma Owl and the Night Owl support team enabled this journey. I can't thank them enough - that kind of support and follow-up in a stressful situation is priceless!
Stop researching pump options and don't buy imitations from China. The Night Owl is the one and only product you should use for a hands-free pumping solution.

Your questions answered

How do they work?

Our wearable breast pumps fit inside your bra so your completely hands free and mobile while pumping. Visit our 'How it works' page for a step by step guide on everything you need to know about The Night Owl wearable breast pumps!

How do I know if they will fit me?

Our wearable pumps were designed to fit inside most standard nursing or maternity bras so your cup size won't affect how it works. As long as it's centered and pressed firmly against your breast with no gaps you're good to go!

The most important fit is your nipple diameter so head over to our fitting guide to ensure you get the correct size flange. Visit our 'fitting guide' for more information

I have larger breasts, will they still work?

Yes absolutely! The Night Owl wearable pumps were designed to fit any breast size.

Can I exclusively use a wearable pump for pumping?

You can absolutely use The Night Owl wearable breast pumps to exclusively pump. Our pumps are designed to cater to the diverse needs of breastfeeding mothers, including those who choose to exclusively pump. Please keep in mind not all wearable breast pumps on the market are suitable for exclusive pumping.

We understand the importance of a reliable and efficient pump for exclusively pumping, and we're here to reassure you that our pumps are up to the task both performance and durability wise. These pumps have been carefully crafted with a focus on motor performance, comfort and durability, ensuring a consistent and effective pumping experience.

It is a common misconception that ALL wearable breast pumps are not "as good" as other pumps as they "aren't strong enough". Although this may be true for some, this isn't true in our case. The strength in our wearable pump motors is actually higher than most average breast pumps out there in the market.

Which pump is recommended for exclusive pumping/expressing?

For exclusive pumping, we highly recommend the Original Night Owl V2 and Mumma Owl models.

These stand out due to their advanced motor performance. The powerful suction (hospital grade level) capabilities and customisable settings make them well-suited for
extended pumping sessions, providing comfort and efficiency for those who choose to exclusively pump.

How do The Night Owl pumps enhance the exclusive pumping experience?

The advanced motor technology and higher suction levels in the recommended models for exclusive pumping (Original Night Owl V2 and Mumma Owl) allows for efficient milk expression, reducing pumping time while maintaining comfort and freedom. Customisable settings provide flexibility to adapt
to your specific needs, ensuring a personalised and effective pumping
routine for exclusive pumping mums.

Can I trust The Night Owl pumps for long-term use?

Absolutely. All night owl pumps are built to withstand long-term, frequent use. We prioritise durability and quality to ensure that your pumping journey remains smooth and reliable over time.

How strong is the suction?

The Night Owl Original V2 pump operates at up 300 mmHg which is in line with larger Hospital Grade pumps. There's 12 levels of suction however the maximum level doesn't necessarily mean a higher milk output. It's very rare that our mums actually use the pump to the maximum suction level as it is very strong - the most important thing is having the right size flange, how the modes are used and how comfortable you are!

Is the suction 'too strong' that it'll hurt?

No absolutely not! The Night Owl pumps have a lot of levels to choose from, so the suction power is split up comfortably - that way you can easily tailor to your personal comfort level. The most gentle of the 3 is the Mumma Owl, however all are gentle as we've designed them to be.

If it 'hurts' that means you either have the level up too high, or an incorrect size.

Are they 'Hospital Grade'?

Although there aren't any official standards in Australia for what 'hospital grade' is defined as - hospital grade suction is generally classified as 300-350 mmHg in the world of breast pumps. Our Mumma Owl and Original Night Owl V2 measure at 300mmHg so they're more than powerful enough, and YES they fall into the 'hospital grade' category.

There's also a significant number of levels of suction, however the maximum level doesn't necessarily mean a higher milk output. It's very rare that our mums actually use the pump to the maximum suction level as it is very strong - the most important thing is having the right size flange, how the modes are used and how comfortable you are!

Are your pumps a 'closed system' / have an 'anti-backflow protector'?

It's important to consider whether you're purchasing a pump with an 'open' or 'closed' system.

All of our night owl pumps have a 'closed system'. This means that there is a barrier between the parts that touch your breast milk, and the pump motor. This is called the back flow protector, or i.e. the diaphragm.

A closed system is important as it prevents your breast milk from being contaminated.

If a pump has an 'open system' this means that they do not have barriers between the parts that touch your breast milk and the tubing, pump motor etc. This allows moisture from pumping to enter any tubing or the motor, where there is the risk of being hidden mould, which will then come into contact with your breast milk - therefore contaminating it and making it unsafe for your baby to drink.
